On one it is a sealed unit somebody cut the tape on and sent straight back. On another, it is a <a href=\"https:\/\/mobilemall.co\/blog\/choosing-the-best-laptop-for-you-the-ultimate-guide\/\">laptop that lived in a student&#8217;s bag<\/a> for three weeks before the refund. Same two words, same discount badge, and the price gap between those two situations is a couple of hundred dollars that you are paying, not the store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not the stores being sneaky, mostly. It is that nobody agreed on the words. Best Buy has its own ladder, Amazon has a different one, eBay lets the seller pick, and the smaller graded stores use a fifth set. So instead of another &#8220;what is open box&#8221; explainer, this is a decoder. What each big store means by each word, what discount that word should buy you, and the three questions that tell you whether a seller is grading or guessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-ladder-everyone-is-secretly-using\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Ladder Everyone Is Secretly Using<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"429\" src=\"https:\/\/mobilemall.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/five-step-scale-from-sealed-to-as-is-describing-the-real-condition-behind-store-grades-1024x429.webp\" alt=\"Five-step scale from sealed to as-is describing the real condition behind store grades\" class=\"wp-image-26266\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strip the branding off and every returned gadget is in one of five states. Every store&#8217;s grades map onto this whether they say so or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sealed.<\/strong> Never opened. If the tape is cut, this word is wrong, no matter how clean the unit is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Opened, nothing found.<\/strong> Box open, everything inside, inspected, no marks. This is the best anything unsealed can be.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Used, light.<\/strong> Works fully, small cosmetic marks, maybe a non-essential accessory gone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Used, heavy.<\/strong> Works fully, obvious marks, missing bits, probably not the original box.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>As-is.<\/strong> Faulty, incomplete, or nobody tested it. The store is telling you they do not know.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep that list open in another tab. The rest of this is just translating store words back onto it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-the-big-stores-mean-by-each-word\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What The Big Stores Mean By Each Word<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Best_Buy\">Best Buy (US and Canada)<\/a>.<\/strong> Four grades, and they are the clearest of the lot because the rules are written down. Excellent-Certified is Geek Squad tested, cleaned, all parts, looks new. Excellent looks new with all original parts, original box or a replacement box. Satisfactory shows minor to moderate signs of use that affect cosmetic appearance, but have no impact on performance, and a screen has no marks in the viewing area. Fair is visible wear and possibly missing accessories, with Best Buy listing what is gone. The part most people miss is that open box gets the same return window as new, 15 days for most items, 30 for paid members. The manufacturer warranty carries over too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing from their own Q&amp;A pages, because it is funny and useful: customers keep answering &#8220;what does open box mean&#8221; with &#8220;it means staff did not check whether the charger is in the box&#8221;. Grades describe the unit. They do not promise the box was counted. Ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/amazon\">Amazon <\/a>(Resale, formerly Warehouse).<\/strong> Four grades with softer names. Like New, Very Good, Good, Acceptable. Like New is the opened-nothing-found state, and it is where the real bargains sit because the discount is often 20 percent on a unit that was never touched. Acceptable is the one to read twice. It covers cosmetic damage, missing accessories, and &#8220;may not include original packaging&#8221; in the same breath, which means it can be anything from a scuffed keyboard to a laptop with no charger. Amazon&#8217;s 30 day return applies, so you can find out, but you are doing the inspection they did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ebay\/?hl=en\">eBay<\/a>.<\/strong> eBay is not a store, it is a form, and the seller fills it in. The condition field offers New, Open box, Used, For parts or not working. &#8220;Open box&#8221; on eBay has no inspection behind it at all. It routinely means a reseller opened the carton to take a photo. Sometimes it means a display unit. Sometimes it means someone used it for a month and did not want to write &#8220;Used&#8221;. Read the description, not the badge, and treat the seller&#8217;s return line as the actual grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Graded independents (Back Market, refurb outlets, the individually listed Canadian stores).<\/strong> These use Fair, Good, Excellent, or a similar three step, and the word only describes cosmetics, because every unit has been tested and the fault ones are pulled out. That is a different promise from Best Buy&#8217;s Fair. Fair here means scratched and working, always. Best Buy Excellent at 8 percent off a new price is not a deal, it is a used product for new money. Amazon Acceptable at 12 percent off is a joke. If the discount does not match the row, walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-returned-usually-means-fine\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Returned Usually Means Fine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason the top grades are safe is boring. Things come back because they were the wrong size, the wrong colour, a duplicate gift, or someone bought three to compare and kept one. None of those involve a fault. Once the carton is open the store cannot legally call it new, so it drops a grade and drops in price, and the device is the same device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The faulty returns exist, but at any store that inspects, they get filtered into Fair or the as-is bin. The risk is not the grade. The risk is a seller who does not filter, and puts the faulty one in the same pile with a nicer word on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-same-words-different-country\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Same Words, Different Country<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grades travel, the protection behind them does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the US, the store&#8217;s return policy is the whole safety net. Best Buy&#8217;s 15 days, Amazon&#8217;s 30, an eBay seller&#8217;s whatever. There is no law forcing a refund on a working item you changed your mind about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada looks like the same market, same chains, same badges, and it is a bigger open-box market per head than most people think because of Boxing Week. The returns from late December land in the open-box channel through January, which is the best stock of the year. The catch is that Canada has no federal right of return either. The seller&#8217;s stated window is your only protection, so the difference between a per-unit graded listing and a pallet-sourced one matters more here than anywhere. Stores <a href=\"https:\/\/halfpricestore.ca\/collections\/electronics\">selling open-box electronics in Canada<\/a> on the graded model publish the condition against the one unit, list what is in the box, keep the as-is stock in its own section priced like as-is, and give a return window you can actually test inside. That combination is what you are buying, more than the discount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia and New Zealand are the other way round. Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.au\/C2004A00109\/latest\">Australian Consumer Law<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.govt.nz\/act\/public\/1993\/91\/en\/latest\/\">New Zealand&#8217;s Consumer Guarantees Act<\/a>, second-hand goods sold by a business still have to be of acceptable quality, so if a graded &#8220;Good&#8221; laptop dies in week three the law is on your side regardless of the store&#8217;s policy. The grades matter less there because the backstop is the law. In North America the grade and the return window are the backstop, which is why you should read both twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-three-questions-that-sort-graders-from-guessers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three Questions That Sort Graders From Guessers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask these before paying anything above the Sealed row:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which of the five states is this unit in? A seller who cannot answer in one line is not grading.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is in the box, exactly? Not &#8220;all accessories&#8221;. The list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where do your as-is units go? If the answer is &#8220;we do not have any&#8221;, every faulty return they ever took is somewhere in the working stock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-to-check-inside-the-return-window\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What To Check Inside The Return Window<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first ten minutes with a device find nothing. The faults that matter show up on day four. Use the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Laptops.<\/strong> Battery cycle count, not scratches. Windows: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/experience\/power-battery\/caring-for-your-battery-in-windows\">run powercfg \/batteryreport and open the file<\/a>. Mac: System Information, Power. A battery at 400 cycles and one at 20 look identical from the outside and are not the same purchase.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Monitors and TVs.<\/strong> Ask for, or take, a full white and a full black screen photo. Dead pixels and backlight bleed never show in a product shot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Earbuds and headphones.<\/strong> Each side pairs and charges on its own in the case. This is where returned earbuds fail most, and it is why they were returned. Budget for new tips.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chargers, cables, docks.<\/strong> The safest category to buy opened and the one where the discount is usually least earned. Just match the wattage printed on the brick to the listing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Printers and anything with a consumable.<\/strong> Assume the starter cartridge or filter is used or gone unless the listing says otherwise. Price it in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-named-beats-nice\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Named Beats Nice<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Excellent condition&#8221; is marketing. &#8220;Used, good, light scuff on the base near the cord, powered on and tested, no charger&#8221; is a claim someone has to stand behind, and you should pay a little more for the second kind of listing than the first. Open-box electronics are the same devices at a discount created by a packaging rule, not by a defect.
