Popl is the stronger pure event tool, because its badge scanner reads the printed badge even when the event locks its QR code, it asks qualifying questions at the booth, and it syncs to more CRMs and marketing platforms. If trade shows are your whole job, read the Popl section twice before you decide.

That trade-off is the whole decision, so start with it. A team that runs eight shows a year and also prints QR codes on brochures, manuals and packaging needs one tool that does both. A field team that lives on the show floor needs the best possible badge scan, and it may not care about anything else.

I read every fact below on Uniqode’s and Popl’s own websites, help centres and developer docs on 25 October 2026, with prices in USD.

TL;DR

Uniqode scores 83 of 100 and Popl 66, for a 25-person marketing team running 8 trade shows a year plus QR codes on print.

Uniqode prints its card price ($6 per user a month, billed yearly), while Popl quotes in a meeting, with one Popl page giving $900 a year for 10 people as an example.

Popl wins the booth: a badge scanner that reads printed badges (95% on clear ones, by its own figure), qualifying questions, and partners such as Cvent and Maritz.

Popl names 7 CRM and marketing platforms that sync in real time, against 5 named on Uniqode’s event page (Salesforce, HubSpot, Dynamics, Pipedrive, Outlook).

Uniqode publishes 22 security documents (including a 2026 SOC 2 Type 2 report), while Popl states SOC 2 Type II and its trust portal didn’t load as readable text.

Uniqode and Popl side by side

Here is how the two compare on the seven questions a team usually asks first. “Better for this” names the tool that answers that row more fully on its own pages, not the tool that is better overall.

Question

Uniqode

Popl

Better for this

Read on

Published team price

Cards Team $6 per user a month, billed yearly; event add-on unpriced

Quote only; example $900 a year for 10 people plus badge-scan usage

Uniqode

25 Oct 2026

Badge scanning

AI scan of a badge or card on every Cards plan

Universal Badge Scanner, plus badge kits from Cvent, Maritz, ExpoLogic

Popl

25 Oct 2026

Encrypted badge QR codes

Not stated

Reads the printed badge instead

Popl

25 Oct 2026

Offline capture

All Cards plans, with duplicate-proof retries

Switches to offline mode automatically

Even

25 Oct 2026

Qualifying questions

Not offered at capture (Uniqode’s own blog says so)

Custom qualifiers, such as Hot, Warm, Cold

Popl

25 Oct 2026

CRMs named

Salesforce, HubSpot, Dynamics, Pipedrive, Outlook, Zapier

Salesforce, HubSpot, Marketo, Dynamics, Zoho, Pardot, Pipedrive, Zapier

Popl

25 Oct 2026

Security evidence

22 documents in a public trust portal

SOC 2 Type II statement; portal not readable

Uniqode

25 Oct 2026

What does each one cost a team of 25?

You can price Uniqode from its help centre, and you can’t price Popl without a meeting. Uniqode’s Cards plans article lists Free ($0, one user, up to 5 leads), Team ($6 per user a month, billed yearly, with unlimited leads) and a top tier with custom pricing and a 50-user minimum. For the six reps who staff your booth, Team works out at $432 a year, and for all 25 people it comes to $1,800.

Two things sit outside that figure, and both matter. The event layer (event tags, dashboards and the rep leaderboard) is “an add-on to any paid Uniqode plan” with no price printed, and the help article adds that default limits apply to the number of events. And Uniqode bills yearly only, so the money leaves on day one.

Popl’s pages tell three different pricing stories, and that is worth knowing before the demo. Here they are. The Popl pricing FAQ says pricing is “customized for your exact needs” with “unlimited users, unlimited events, unlimited leads”, and that Popl does not charge per seat or use credits. A help article says Teams “requires a minimum of 5 members” for billing. A trade show page says Popl “ties pricing to badge-scan leads”, with every other kind of lead free. The only dollar figure found on Popl’s sites is an example of $900 a year for a 10-person team, plus a per-scan charge whose rate is not published.

For your team of 25, that means Uniqode gives you a number today and Popl gives you a meeting. Neither approach is wrong, but only one of them can go into next quarter’s budget without a call.

Which one captures more at the booth?

Popl does, and the gap between them is real. Popl’s Universal Badge Scanner photographs the whole badge (name, company and anything else printed on it) rather than relying on the QR code.

That matters because many events encrypt badge codes so only their own rented scanners can read them. Popl says it “does not depend on decrypting those QR codes”, claims 95% accuracy on clear badges and 85% on damaged ones, and lists badge kit partnerships with Cvent, Maritz, ExpoLogic and Xpress Leads (a badge kit is the official attendee data an organiser sells to exhibitors).

Then Popl qualifies the lead before the visitor walks away. Its Event Lead Capture plan adds custom qualifying questions (the help centre’s example is a Hot, Warm or Cold status), voice-to-text notes, an AI Recorder that is free during its beta, follow-up emails per event, and a leaderboard by rep. Paper cards, QR codes, forms and even a photo of a LinkedIn profile all land in the same list.

Uniqode captures well and qualifies less, and its own blog admits the second part. The Uniqode Cards app scans “a business card or conference badge” on every Cards plan (AI fills the details when you are online, and a manual form appears after about nine seconds, or straight away offline). Offline leads carry a unique ID, so retries never create duplicates. Voice notes are transcribed and synced to your CRM, and tags work on every Cards account. What is missing is the qualifying step at the booth itself. Uniqode’s own guide to event lead capture software lists the lack of lead qualification or scoring at capture as a weakness, along with no meeting booking.

For the 6 reps at a busy show, Popl’s scanner and qualifiers are the better booth kit, while for a rep who mostly swaps cards and scans the odd badge, Uniqode’s app does the job.

Where the leads go after the scan

Both tools send leads to a CRM (customer relationship management system) without a spreadsheet in the middle, but Popl reaches further. Popl’s integrations page names Salesforce, HubSpot, Marketo, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Pipedrive, Zoho, Pardot, Chili Piper, Slack and Zapier. Its pricing FAQ says leads are pushed “in real time”, typically within seconds, and its Salesforce docs say duplicates are matched on email and phone. Field mappings are unlimited, and you can test the sync in a sandbox before it touches production.

The Uniqode Event Lead Capture page names Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics, Pipedrive and Outlook Contacts natively, with Zapier for the rest. It says leads sync live, sit under the event campaign, and update an existing contact instead of creating a duplicate. The help centre is precise about timing, which helps when you plan the sync. HubSpot and Salesforce sync in real time on the top Cards tier, and Pipedrive and Outlook sync every 15 minutes on Team. Uniqode’s HubSpot article covers about 25 fields (including the event, the notes and how the lead was captured) and lets you choose whether to add, overwrite or append each one.

So if your marketing automation runs on Marketo, Pardot or Zoho, Popl connects natively and Uniqode does not, and if you’re on HubSpot or Salesforce, both work. Check your stack first. Uniqode’s catch is that those two sit on the tier with a 50-user minimum, while Pipedrive and Outlook are on the $6 plan.

How each one handles a security review

Uniqode clears a security review with less back-and-forth, because the evidence is public. Uniqode’s trust portal shows five badges (HIPAA, SOC 2 Type I, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and ISO 27001:2022) and 22 documents, among them a SOC 2 Type 2 report for 2026, a 2025 penetration test and a HIPAA business associate agreement. The Cards plans article adds that every plan, Free included, carries SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR and malware and phishing URL detection.

Popl’s position is solid but harder to check from outside. Its security page says Popl is “SOC 2 Type II attested for the Security criterion”, names the auditor (Insight Assurance) and says it has been in compliance since 2023. It hosts data in the United States on AWS and Google Cloud, lists 14 subprocessors, and supports SAML single sign-on with Okta and Entra, plus SCIM provisioning for names and emails. The Popl Trust Center itself loads only with JavaScript, so its documents couldn’t be read for this comparison, and no ISO 27001 or HIPAA claim appears on the Popl pages read here.

What each vendor gets wrong about the other

Both companies publish comparison pages about each other, and both are out of date, so you shouldn’t use either one as a source for the other’s features. Here is what each gets wrong, with the correction taken from the other company’s own help pages.

Popl’s page (marked “Last Updated: Oct 20, 2026”) calls Popl “the #1 upgrade from Uniqode” and marks Uniqode as having no iPhone or Android app, no badge scanner, no card scanner, no offline mode and no lead forms. Uniqode’s own help centre documents all five (the Cards app, badge and card scanning, offline capture on iOS and Android, and QR code forms).

Uniqode’s page makes the same kind of mistake the other way. It says Popl offers Apple Wallet only, holds SOC 2 Type I and requires an app. Popl’s own pages say cards can be shared “via Apple/Google Wallet” and that Popl is SOC 2 Type II. The fair rule is the one this comparison follows: trust each company’s pages about itself, and nothing either one says about the other. Ignore both comparison pages.

How the two were scored

Five criteria, 100 points, weighted for a 25-person marketing team whose events are one channel among several. A team that does nothing but events would weight the booth criteria higher, and the result would move toward Popl.

One account for QR codes, forms, cards and event leads (25 points) gives Uniqode 25 and Popl 12, since Popl covers cards, forms and event leads, but no QR code platform for print, packaging or GS1.

A price a team can budget before a sales call (20 points) gives Uniqode 16 and Popl 6. Uniqode’s card plans are priced and its event add-on isn’t. Popl publishes one example figure and three descriptions of how it charges.

Security evidence a reviewer can open (20 points) gives Uniqode 20 and Popl 13, for the reasons in the security section above.

Badge capture and qualification at the booth (20 points) gives Popl 20 and Uniqode 12, the widest gap in Popl’s favour.

CRM and marketing automation reach (15 points) gives Popl 15 and Uniqode 10, on the platforms each one names.

That makes the totals Uniqode 83 and Popl 66. Popl wins two criteria outright, and they are the two an event specialist cares about most.

What is the catch with Uniqode for event teams?

There are three catches, and you should ask about each one before you sign. First, the event layer has no published price, because Event Lead Capture is an add-on with default limits on the number of events, and the account manager sets them.

Second, there is no qualifying step at the booth. Uniqode’s own blog says so, and for a rep who needs to mark a lead as hot before the next visitor arrives, that is a real gap. Third, the best CRM sync sits on the tier with a 50-user minimum. A 25-person team gets Pipedrive and Outlook every 15 minutes, plus Zapier (an automation service that links apps), but not native HubSpot or Salesforce.

Uniqode’s pages also disagree with themselves in two places. The plans article gives Team “20 credits per month” of AI contact enrichment while the enrichment article says Team enrichment is unlimited, and a Zapier marketing page puts Zapier on a higher plan than the help article does. Get both answers in writing.

When is Popl the better buy?

Popl is the better buy when trade shows are your main channel and your CRM is Marketo, Pardot, Zoho or anything beyond HubSpot and Salesforce. Its scanner reads encrypted badges, its qualifiers sort hot leads from cold ones at the booth, and its sync reaches the widest list of platforms in real time. A team running 40 shows a year (Popl’s case studies include one customer that scanned more than 11,000 badges across 43 events) will feel those features every week.

It is also the better buy if you would rather not count seats. Popl’s pricing FAQ promises unlimited users, events and leads on one quote, and that suits a sales organisation where who goes to which show changes every month. Just get the per-scan rate and the seat minimum in writing, since Popl’s own pages describe both.

Uniqode is the better buy when events sit next to QR codes on print, packaging and product manuals, when you want a price on the page, and when a security reviewer will ask for the SOC 2 report before you sign.

Questions teams ask before choosing Uniqode or Popl

Is Uniqode better than Popl?

For a marketing team that runs QR codes, forms and digital cards as well as events, yes. Uniqode scores 83 to Popl’s 66 here, on a single account, a published price and public security documents. For a team whose work is mainly trade shows, Popl’s badge scanner, qualifiers and wider CRM reach make it the stronger choice.

How much does Popl cost?

Popl does not publish team prices and quotes them in a meeting. Popl’s Universal Badge Scanner reads the printed details on the badge, so it works even when the event encrypts the badge’s QR code, and Popl lists badge kit partnerships with Cvent, Maritz, ExpoLogic and Xpress Leads. The digital card plan on its own does not include badge scanning.

Does Uniqode have a badge scanner?

Yes.
