Meta is rolling out Facebook Verified today, and the surprise is the price tag: free. This is not the blue check subscription, it is a separate badge that answers a much simpler question, whether the account you are talking to actually belongs to a real person. Given how much of Facebook lately feels like arguing with bots and dodging fake sellers, the timing explains itself.
Getting the badge is quick. You record a selfie video, Meta checks it against your existing profile pictures for a match, and the whole process takes only a few minutes. If you pass, the badge shows up first in Facebook Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and on your profile, with Feed posts getting it later. Notice where those first placements are. Marketplace and Dating are exactly where getting fooled by a fake account costs people real money and real hurt, so this is Meta patching its scam problem where it bleeds most.
One thing worth being clear on: the badge only confirms a human exists behind the account. Meta says outright that it does not endorse the user or vouch for their trustworthiness. A verified scammer is still a scammer, the badge just proves he has a face.
The eligibility rules are strict enough to matter. You need to be over 18, in good standing with the Community Standards, specifically the ones prohibiting fraud, scams, and deceptive practices, and showing no evidence of inauthentic behavior. Pages and ProMode accounts do not qualify at all, this is for regular humans only.
The rollout starts in select markets Meta has not named, expanding globally over time, so do not panic if the option is not showing on your account yet. It is coming, and honestly, once enough people carry the badge, the accounts without one are going to start looking suspicious by default. That quiet pressure might end up being the whole point.
