Gemini Can Now Edit The Files It Makes Without You Downloading Them

Google added file creation to the Gemini app back in April, when it started turning a chat request into a Google Doc, a Sheet, a PDF or a Markdown file, as announced on the Google blog at the time. Changing anything in that file meant exporting it first and opening it somewhere else. As of today the editing happens inside the chat.

The File Opens Full Screen And You Type Into It

Documents, PDFs, slide decks, spreadsheets, code files and other formats Gemini produces can now be previewed and edited directly in the Gemini app. The file expands to full screen, and from there you can type your own changes, highlight a passage and ask Gemini about it, have it rework a paragraph or a chart, or carry on with follow-up questions while the file stays open beside the conversation.

Only PDFs Work On Mobile For Now

PDF preview and editing is live on both web and mobile, while every other format is web only. That covers Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code. Google has not said when those come to the phone apps.

The rollout is to all Gemini users, free and paid, in every language the app supports, from today.
