Google finally picked a date. Assistant starts disappearing from Android on Friday, September 4, and the emails went out to holdout users this week.
Here’s the part that deserves more attention than the date itself. Once the switch reaches your device, you can’t use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or anything paired to it. No toggle, no opt-out. Right now the Gemini app still offers a “Switch to Google Assistant” option – after your device flips, that’s gone for good.
Who’s affected: Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones, and cars running Android Auto projected from a phone. Vehicles with Google built-in keep Assistant past September 4, no new deadline given for those. Google TV, Home speakers and smart displays aren’t part of this announcement either, though Gemini is heading to them eventually. And it won’t all happen at once – Google says the process may take a few weeks to reach everyone.
Worth knowing what doesn’t survive the move. Interpreter Mode and the automated daily updates have no confirmed Gemini equivalent yet, and the Verge points to gaps in exactly the small day-to-day commands people lean on most. Timers, smart home toggles, the hands-free stuff you do without thinking. Assistant ran on hardcoded rules and was fast and predictable at that narrow job; Gemini is a generative model doing something much broader. Broader isn’t automatically better when you just want the kitchen light off.
Assistant launched back in May 2016 inside Allo, and this shutdown was supposed to happen at the end of 2025 before Google pushed it to 2026. Ten years, one date, done.
If you want to move on your own terms before the cutoff: grab the Gemini app from the Play Store, then Settings, Apps, Assistant, Digital assistants from Google, pick Gemini and follow the prompts. Same result either way, just without waiting for Google to do it to you.
