Samsung’s Brightest Phone Screen Yet Hits 10,000 Nits

That 10,000 nit figure is doing a lot of work in the headlines today, so here’s what it actually means before anyone gets carried away.

The 10,000 nits only applies to a tiny patch of the screen

Local peak brightness means the panel can drive a small isolated area that hard for a few seconds up to a couple of minutes, typically a bright highlight in HDR content. The whole screen never lights up like that. The number that matters day to day is global peak brightness, and that’s 2,800 nits, with 1,100 nits if you just drag the slider up manually. Still a lot of screen, just not a searchlight.

The panel debuts on the iQOO 16, not a Samsung phone

Samsung Display and iQOO announced it together at a joint event, and iQOO is branding it the Samsung Everest display. It’s the first Android phone to use Samsung’s M16 luminescent material, which already ships in the iPhone 18 Pro series and the iPhone Duo. The two companies built a dedicated production line and a custom 22nm display chip for it. Samsung’s own Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra are expected to move to M16 panels later.

It’s also the first phone screen to do 2K at 165Hz

Resolution is WQHD at 2,560 x 1,440 and 508 PPI, with an LTPO refresh rate that scales from 1Hz all the way to 165Hz. Touch sampling runs at 5,000Hz instantaneous and 500Hz for multi-finger input. High resolution and high refresh usually fight each other for battery, which is the trade-off this panel is meant to settle.

Power draw and flicker both improved

LEAD 2.0 is the architecture around the M16 material, and Samsung claims 30% less power than standard OLED panels, or 31% less than a comparable 1.5K screen. Flicker sensitivity gets 3,300Hz PWM dimming plus full-brightness DC dimming, with TÜV Rheinland eye comfort certification. There’s a factory anti-reflective film and a polarizer-free design that puts the colour filters directly on the OLED layer.
