Qualcomm made the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 official at its summit in Maui this week, and phone makers didn’t wait. Most of the big Android brands have already named the handsets carrying them, and the first one lands today.
There Are Two Chips This Year, Not One Chip With Two Speeds
Worth clearing up before the device list, because the naming is confusing. The Extreme is a separate hardware design rather than an overclocked version of the standard chip, though both are built on TSMC’s 2nm process. Both run an eight-core Oryon CPU with two prime cores hitting 5GHz, which Qualcomm says is a first for a mobile processor. The gap between them shows up in the graphics, where the Extreme gets the Adreno 850 and the standard chip gets the Adreno 845.
Xiaomi Gets The First Phones Out The Door
The Xiaomi 18 series goes official in China today. The 18 Pro takes the standard 8 Elite Gen 6 and the 18 Pro Max gets the Extreme, which is the split most brands seem to be following this year. Xiaomi has said a global launch follows later in 2026.
Honor And iQOO Follow Within The Week
Honor’s Magic9 Pro Max arrives on September 28 with the Extreme chip. A day later, on September 29, iQOO launches both the iQOO 16 and the iQOO Pad Ultra on the Extreme, and vivo has confirmed more of its own phones will use it after that. The vivo X500 Ultra is reportedly lined up for early 2027.
October Brings The Gaming Phone
RedMagic’s 12Pro+ is due in October with the Extreme. OnePlus has confirmed the OnePlus 16 on the same chip, with a gaming kernel it says is built into the chip’s underlying structure rather than layered on top. Motorola’s Signature 27 also takes the Extreme, and Motorola is promising seven years of OS upgrades with it.
The Wider List Runs To Eleven Brands
Beyond the phones with dates attached, Qualcomm named Honor, iQOO, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE as adopting one or both chips across their coming flagships. Which specific models get the Extreme rather than the standard version hasn’t been settled for most of them yet.
