Vivo X500 Pro Max Shown Off, Launching 21 September

Vivo has put out the first official look at the X500 Pro Max. Product vice president Huang Tao posted the rear shots on Weibo, showing the phone in silver and a fairly loud orange, with a second image confirming the launch date.

The design carries straight over from the X300 Ultra

Dual-tone back panel, one big circular camera island holding three sensors with Zeiss branding, and the LED flash tucked up in the top-left corner. Anyone who has seen an X300 Ultra will recognise it immediately. There’s also an action button on the frame, and the render shows a protective case with a mount built into it.

That mount is for the 400mm teleconverter

This is the part worth caring about. The X500 Pro Max supports the same Zeiss 400mm teleconverter that shipped with the X300 Ultra, a lens that clips onto the outside of the phone and pushes its native 85mm periscope to roughly 16.6x reach without falling apart the way digital zoom does. Handy for concerts, sport, birds, anything you can’t walk closer to. Vivo also posted a video sample and a photo taken through the converter.

The periscope underneath it is the X300 Ultra’s sensor

Vivo has confirmed the Pro Max uses Samsung’s 1/1.4-inch ISOCELL HP0 for the telephoto, the same unit that hit CIPA Level 7 stabilisation on the X300 Ultra earlier this year, with 30x capture supported through the phone’s own processing. Magnetic accessories and a camera grip are part of the kit too.

Vivo has dropped the Ultra name for this generation

Last year’s halo model was the X300 Ultra. This year the same hardware sits under a Pro Max badge, which puts Vivo in line with Oppo doing exactly the same thing with the Find X10 Pro Max. The X500, X500 Pro and X500 Pro Max all get unveiled in China on 21 September, and pricing is the one thing still missing.
