Today at WWDC, Apple revealed the latest versions of its OSes, which power its phones, tablets, computers, and watches. Here’s a list of which currently running devices will be upgraded to the latest version.
iOS 16
iOS 16 includes widgets on your lock screen. It also enhances notifications and adds new features to messages. Apple Wallet support for managing digital IDs and Pay Later are also included. Also, there’s an Always On Display, which will only be available on next-generation phones.
iOS 16 supports the iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone X from 2017 and subsequent models. This means older models running version 15 – the iPhone 6s (from 2015), iPhone 7, the original SE, and the iPod touch (7th generation) are not supported.
iPadOS 16
iPadOS 16. enhanced multitasking capabilities, and support external displays on M1-powered iPads. In addition, there are new tools for collaboration that work with Mail and Safari, and the Weather app is now available on Apple tablets, as well as other enhancements.
The new version is compatible with every iPad Pro version, including iPad Airs (3rd generation and later), the vanilla iPad (5th generation and later), and the iPad mini (5th generation and up). Compared with iPadOS 15, the 15 version has no functionality for iPad Air 2 (from 2014, almost eight years old today) and iPad mini 4 (2015).
WatchOS 9
WatchOS 9.0 requires a device running iOS 16, so even if you own the most recent Apple Watch, you also need an iPhone 8/X or later. The Apple Watch Series 4 and older models are compatible with the watches.
