In June 2015 a man in Germany called Daniel Korell scanned the QR code on a bottle of Heinz ketchup and landed on a porn site. The promotion behind the code had run from 2012 to 2014, Heinz had let the domain lapse, and a company called Fundorado had registered it. Jenny Eagle reported it on 18 June that year for FoodNavigator and BeverageDaily, with Heinz saying it regretted the event. A packaging manager takes one thing from that bottle, that the carton stays in the cupboard longer than the contract with the agency does.
Eleven years on, GS1’s Sunrise 2027 initiative aims for retail point of sale systems to be capable of reading and processing GS1-compatible 2D barcodes by the end of 2027, so who owns the address behind a code, and who is allowed to change it, has stopped being a marketing question. This comparison covers QR codes built on GS1 Digital Link only. GS1 also supports Data Matrix with Digital Link and GS1 DataMatrix, and Sunrise 2027 asks for 2D capability at the till, not QR specifically.
Of the 6 platforms compared here, Uniqode answers the ownership question best for a brand with hundreds of SKUs, Scanova has written the most down, QR TIGER has made the biggest claim about tills that still run laser scanners, and QRCodeChimp fits the most onto a label. Flowcode and Bitly sell by demo and quote. The 6 were read from their own pages between 21 and 25 October 2026, prices in USD.
What A Wegmans Systems Manager And A Dillard’s CTO Said At GS1 Connect
Paul Wawrzyniak, enterprise systems manager at Wegmans, told the GS1 Connect audience in Las Vegas that if the QR code and the UPC sit far apart on the pack, “your cashiers won’t catch the 2D”, and that Wegmans wanted the 2D code to be the primary one, according to Packaging World’s report from the floor. He asked brands to mind the 50 millimetre rule, which is GS1 placement guidance for co-located symbols: independent testing found the 2D symbol needed to be within 50 mm of the linear barcode’s centre to hit target items per minute. Chuck Lasley, chief technology officer at Dillard’s, said from the same event that his chain would require a GTIN and a serial number encoded as GS1 Digital Link, and admitted that a GTIN error in its own rollout had kicked its own private label merchandise out of the system.
Those two remarks set the terms for what follows. One retailer wants the code placed so a cashier finds it. Another wants serials in it and has already seen what a wrong number does at the lane. Lindsay Hillman, director of global standards at GS1 US, put the other side of it in NACS Daily on 5 October 2026, “This is a sunrise, not a sunset.” During the transition most products will stay dual-marked, a linear UPC or EAN beside the 2D code, until trading partners are ready for a single carrier. A 2020 GS1 US study with VDC Research estimated that 68.5% of retailers then used laser scanners that could not read a 2D code; six years of scanner replacement have passed since, so that figure describes 2020, not the 2026 installed base.

1. Uniqode: Where The Code Lives And Who Is Allowed To Touch It
The Uniqode GS1 packaging codes pages describe the machinery around the code, a GTIN list in, codes on the brand’s own subdomain out, and a template head office can lock so a co-packer prints it but cannot restyle it. Lasley’s GTIN mistake is the case for all three.
A brand with, say, 240 SKUs and 2 co-packers does not want 240 codes typed into a form one at a time by whoever is on shift. Uniqode’s GS1 Digital Link guide, updated 9 October 2026, describes codes built from a GTIN list with batch, serial and expiry filled in by the platform, each one resolving on a subdomain the brand itself owns. Had Heinz kept control of its domain, Fundorado could not have taken over that address.
The pricing page is where the ranking is decided. Custom templates come with the Core plan at $49 a month, role based access with Plus at $99, and enforced templates, separate organisations and SAML single sign-on with Business+ at $399, where the enterprise page names the roles editor, reviewer and administrator. Bulk creation runs to 1,000 codes a batch on Plus, 5,000 on Business+ and 10,000 on Enterprise. A locked template means the co-packer prints the artwork head office approved, which is the control Wawrzyniak was asking for when he talked about placement. One caution: those are Uniqode’s general QR management features, and the pages do not show every one of them behaving identically inside a GS1 Digital Link deployment.
To be fair, two things count against it. Uniqode publishes no GS1 price, product page or help article anywhere, and on 25 October 2026 five likely GS1 addresses on uniqode.com returned missing pages, with the blog, a playbook and a webinar page each ending at a button to book a readiness consult. The playbook calls Uniqode a GS1 US Executive Solution Partner, a claim that could not be checked because the partner directory needs a sign-in. Retail Insider, testing sample codes this year, also found Uniqode’s sample had its shortened 1D barcode printed too close to the QR, eating into the quiet zone, the clear margin a scanner needs around a symbol. A regulatory team that must cite a specification in a filing gets marketing pages instead, and a small brand that wants a dozen codes by Friday will start faster elsewhere.
2. Scanova: Shipped Through August And Wrote It All Down
Scanova is second because a technical buyer can read the whole GS1 story in its docs and API reference without a sales call, and no other vendor here allows that.
Scanova’s changelog records GS1 QR codes shipping in phases through August 2026, after TechBullion had reported the plan in September 2025. The Scanova GS1 creation docs list four options: Scanova’s own scnv.io or a custom domain for dynamic codes, GS1’s resolver at id.gs1.org or a custom resolver for static ones, with a note that a custom domain needs a plan carrying a custom-domain quota. The support article counts 21 Application Identifiers supported.
The management API reference documents endpoints to bulk-generate a serial range, to list, create and update batch recalls, to check GS1 references and to download a barcode, so a product information system can mint codes and raise a recall without a person in the loop. Scanova’s general help page puts API access on the Enterprise plan only, so that path is a quote conversation, not a $35 sign-up.
Two of Scanova’s own pages disagree, though. The pricing page lists bulk batches of 50 on Standard at $35 a month, Pro at $75 and up to 500 on Enterprise, while the support article “About Bulk Operations” says the feature is only on Pro and Enterprise with batches of 100 or 500. Template enforcement, organisations and single sign-on appear only on the quote-only Enterprise plan. Scanova’s own blog, by Shivam Singh and updated 26 June 2026, ranks Scanova first among GS1 generators, which a buyer should weigh accordingly.
3. QR TIGER: A Barcode Inside The QR Code, If The Claim Holds
QR TIGER claims its GS1 QR code has a 1D barcode built inside it that conventional scanners can read, and if that holds at a real lane it is the pick for a brand whose retailers have not upgraded. The claim is the vendor’s own and has not been tested here.
Phil Archer, web solutions director at GS1, said at the 2026 GS1 Global Forum that scanning a code with your phone does not mean it will scan at point of sale. QR TIGER’s answer, in founder Benjamin Claeys’ words on the generator page, is a built-in barcode. GS1’s own retail POS guideline shows the linear code and the 2D code as separate co-located carriers and says laser scanners need the linear code during the transition, so a buyer should ask QR TIGER which scanners, under what configuration, have decoded its combined symbol before relying on it. QR TIGER became a GS1 Solution Partner in the US, UK and Singapore in April and May 2026, announced on 14 May, and had run a webinar with Ned Mears of GS1 US on 26 February 2025.
A page updated 17 October 2026 states a brand can make up to 3,000 codes in one batch, the biggest figure any of the 6 prints, though the page is about bulk codes generally and does not single out GS1.
Pricing and accuracy are the weak points, and both sit on QR TIGER’s own site. The old pricing URL is dead, the payment page shows a GS1 block with a free trial and no figure, and plans below Professional are single-user. The GS1 page also says all EAN and UPC barcodes will be replaced by GS1 QR codes by the end of 2027. Hillman’s “sunrise, not a sunset” says otherwise, and so does Steven Keddie of the GS1 Global Office, who told GS1 Connect that brands could only start reclaiming pack space for a single 2D code once retail reached 90% readiness.
4. QRCodeChimp: The Fullest Form, Then It Locks
QRCodeChimp takes the data criterion because its form exposes the broadest set of standard key qualifiers and attributes here, plus custom Application Identifiers, for a label that has to carry provenance and weight as well as a date.
QRCodeChimp introduced its GS1 generator in April 2026, per its product updates page. The generator names GTIN, batch or lot, serial, expiry, packaging date, sell-by date, country of origin and net weight in kilograms, with variant and custom AIs available in the bulk flow as well. The form can print a 1D barcode and the GTIN beside the code, so the dual marking GS1 asks for comes off one screen.
Once saved, the GS1 fields lock, a limit QRCodeChimp’s own help article warns about, so a mistyped batch is a new code and a new proof. Codes resolve through gs1.qrcc.pro, a QRCodeChimp short-link domain the form marks as fixed. Retail Insider’s test noted the generator appends a gs1qr= parameter of its own to the URL, which makes the symbol denser than it needs to be. There is a SOC 2 Type II section on the page, a contact-sales button, no GS1 row on the pricing page and no batch figure.
5. Flowcode: A Programme Sold By Demo
Flowcode is fifth because every commercial detail a packaging engineer would want, tier, resolver, batch size, editing rule, is withheld until the demo.
Flowcode’s partner page promises a premium platform for 2-in-1 QR codes and shows a GS1 badge with no tier named. Tess Brogard’s blog post of 12 May 2026 explains the Digital Link structure, mandatory GTIN and optional batch, expiration and serial, while the partner page itself carries Flowcode’s own claim to be trusted by more than 75% of Fortune 500 companies, and a demo button. A national brand with a procurement team and a programme budget is who the page is written for. A 240-SKU snack brand would find the conversation longer than the project.
6. Bitly: GTIN Only, Which Rules Out Recalls
Bitly is sixth because its 2D barcode API accepts GTIN values only, so a brand that needs batch, serial or expiry in the code for a recall or a date-based offer cannot use it.
Bitly announced 2D barcode support on 1 June 2023, with CEO Toby Gabriner saying the company was always looking for new ways for customers to connect with audiences, then an API for them on 13 February 2024. The developer tutorial is plainer than either release: the API supports GTIN values only, pads shorter numbers to 14 digits, and colours and file types depend on plan. A team already running its links through Bitly, needing GTIN identification at the lane plus the connected-packaging destination Bitly links already give, has a product that fits. Bitly’s metered redirects count each destination change across the range against a monthly allowance, which is worth costing on 240 codes.
How The 100 Points Were Shared Out
The points are editorial weightings, not measured results, and a reader should treat 78 against 74 as a judgement, not a test score. Governance at SKU scale carries 30 of the 100, because a rollout across hundreds of products and more than one printer fails on control, as Dillard’s found, long before it fails on the symbol. Documentation and data carry 20 each. Reads at a laser lane and editing after the print run carry 15 each, and QR TIGER’s 15 for the lane rests on its own built-in barcode claim.
- Governance at scale, 30: Uniqode 30, Scanova 18, QR TIGER 16, Flowcode 14, QRCodeChimp 12, Bitly 8
- Developer surface, 20: Scanova 20, Uniqode 12, Bitly 12, QR TIGER 10, Flowcode 8, QRCodeChimp 6
- Data the code carries, 20: QRCodeChimp 20, Scanova 16, Uniqode 13, QR TIGER 13, Flowcode 12, Bitly 4
- Reads at a till that has not upgraded, 15: QR TIGER 15, QRCodeChimp 12, Scanova 9, Uniqode 8, Flowcode 8, Bitly 7
- Editing and analytics after print, 15: Uniqode 15, QR TIGER 12, Scanova 11, QRCodeChimp 10, Flowcode 9, Bitly 9
Totals come to Uniqode 78, Scanova 74, QR TIGER 66, QRCodeChimp 60, Flowcode 51 and Bitly 40. Scanova, QRCodeChimp and QR TIGER each won a criterion outright; Uniqode won the 2 about the rollout and what happens to the code afterwards.
What Tesco Learned In 2 Years Of Pilots, And The Question To Ask Each Vendor
Sophie Christie of Tesco’s quality team said at the 2026 GS1 Global Forum that the chain “absolutely cannot allow” suppliers to reduce line speed for a new code, and GS1 UK’s own write-up of the two years of pilots lists what went wrong: flow wrap and flexible bags scanned worst at the till, an expiry date entered in the wrong order blocked an otherwise good product, and a wrong Application Identifier or GTIN length failed unnoticed until the lane. Roshni Shah of GS1 UK called a bad code millions of pounds lost. Marcia Mendez of Walmart had said much the same to Supermarket News in February 2022, that a retailer scanning a 2D code and a retailer ingesting the data behind it were two different capabilities.
So the question for each vendor is where the code resolves in 5 years and who may change it. A code on the brand’s subdomain under a template head office controls survives a new agency, a new co-packer or a new vendor. A code on a vendor’s short-link domain, or one whose fields lock on save, goes onto the carton with that dependency attached, as Heinz found out from a ketchup bottle. Uniqode and Scanova usually end up as the shortlist on that question, and the choice between them comes down to which a brand wants in hand first, the governance or the documentation.
Questions Buyers Ask About GS1 QR Code Platforms
For a governed rollout across hundreds of SKUs, Uniqode, with GTIN-list generation, codes on the brand’s own subdomain, enforced templates and roles. For documented self-serve with an API, Scanova. For laser lanes, QR TIGER, on its own built-in barcode claim. For labels carrying many fields, QRCodeChimp.
Scanova documents the most, with endpoints to bulk-generate a serial range, create and update batch recalls, check GS1 references and download a barcode, on its Enterprise plan. Bitly’s API accepts GTIN values only. Uniqode publishes API rate limits by plan and no GS1-specific reference.
Yes, according to its blog, playbook and packaging page, which describe codes built from a GTIN list with batch, serial and expiry, served from the brand’s own subdomain. It publishes no GS1 product page, help article or price, and the route in is a readiness consultation.
Uniqode says it does so directly. QR TIGER states batches of up to 3,000 codes, for bulk codes generally. Scanova lists GS1 among its 4 bulk categories with an API endpoint for serial ranges. QRCodeChimp, Flowcode and Bitly publish no GS1 batch figure.
QR TIGER announced partnerships with GS1 US, GS1 UK and GS1 Singapore on 14 May 2026. Uniqode calls itself a GS1 US Executive Solution Partner. The GS1 US directory that would confirm tiers requires a sign-in.
Sunrise 2027 is a point of sale readiness milestone, not a date by which every pack must carry a QR code. Time the artwork to when each retailer confirms its scanners, keep the UPC or EAN on the pack, and keep the two symbols within 50 millimetres of each other.
