Apple is reportedly taking a different direction with the iPhone 17 Air, focusing on slimming down both size and weight. If leaks are accurate, the device will weigh about 146 grams—possibly even less—making it lighter than Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge. This would be a notable shift in Apple’s approach to large-screen phones, especially since the new model is expected to replace the iPhone 16 Plus this fall.

Based on consistent rumors, the iPhone 17 Air will maintain the overall size of the iPhone 16 Plus but will cut down significantly on thickness and materials. A key reason behind the lighter profile seems to be Apple’s decision to move away from the titanium frame used in previous models. Instead, the new phone is expected to use 7000 series aluminum alloy, which reduces the chassis weight to just around 25–30 grams.

Estimating from available component data, the phone could include a 35g AMOLED display, a 48MP rear camera unit weighing 7g, a glass back around 15g, and a battery expected to be between 2800 and 2900mAh with silicon-carbon (Si/C) anode technology. That battery could weigh approximately 35g. Adding up all the components brings the total weight close to the rumored 146g—light by modern flagship standards.

The thickness of the device is rumored to be just 5.5mm, a figure that would make the iPhone 17 Air the slimmest iPhone ever made and thinner than its closest competition. If accurate, this design will appeal to users who prefer lightweight and ultra-thin devices without compromising screen size.

While full hardware details haven’t been officially released, several leaks have filled in parts of the picture. The iPhone 17 Air is said to feature a 24MP front camera and a 48MP main rear sensor. It is expected to come with 8GB of RAM and an XDR OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Additional features like Dynamic Island, Face ID, wireless charging, and eSIM support also appear to be included in this model.

There are still many unknowns, and Apple has not confirmed any of the details. If the reports are correct, the iPhone 17 Air will set a new benchmark for light flagship smartphones.

More information will likely surface closer to launch. Until then, this new direction signals Apple’s clear intent to lead the market not just in performance but also in design simplicity and user comfort.
