iPhone 18 Pro’s main camera is getting physically bigger, the latest Weibo leak says

Apple’s next Pro iPhone looks set for a chunkier camera, and the back of the phone will show it.

A Weibo leaker going by Fixed Focus Digital posted over the weekend that the iPhone 18 Pro’s main camera upgrade is “confirmed,” and that it pushes the thickness of the phone’s aluminium back panel up by more than 2mm. In a follow-up, the leaker put it down to an enlarged main camera module, suggesting the internal components are far bigger than what sits inside the iPhone 17 Pro. So the camera platform on the rear, already a talking point every year, gets taller again.

What’s driving the extra bulk is the part worth paying attention to. The headline feature, rumoured for well over a year now, is a variable aperture on the main camera. Every iPhone Pro from the 14 Pro through the 17 Pro has run a fixed ƒ/1.78 lens that stays wide open whenever you shoot. Variable aperture changes that, widening in low light to pull in more photons and closing down in bright scenes to avoid blowing out the highlights. It also hands you real optical control over depth of field instead of the software-estimated blur iPhones lean on today. Apple has never shipped this on any iPhone, which is what makes it a genuine first rather than a spec bump.

This isn’t coming from one tipster talking into the void, either. Supply-chain reporting via ETNews has Apple’s manufacturers already in active production, with Sunny Optical building the actuator mechanisms that move the aperture blades and LG Innotek installing equipment in Gumi, South Korea for module assembly. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first called the variable-aperture main camera for both Pro models back in December 2024, so the latest leak is stacking on top of a fairly well-supported claim.

A larger sensor could be feeding the size increase too. Digital Chat Station, a separate Weibo account, listed a 1/1.12-inch main sensor among four camera upgrades Apple is working on, alongside optical stabilisation for the ultra-wide and an eventual 200MP telephoto. Not all of that lands this year. The variable aperture is the one most likely to show up on the 18 Pro; the rest looks like it’s spread across future models.

Worth keeping the leaker’s track record in view. Weibo accounts like Digital Chat Station have a habit of recycling claims sourced from elsewhere, and the variable-aperture rumour itself has been floating since 2024, first pinned to the iPhone 17, then pushed to the 18 Pro. The supplier evidence is the firmer signal here, not the “confirmed” wording.

On timing, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected in September, reportedly sharing the stage with a new iPhone Ultra. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, possibly with an iPhone Air 2, are tipped to slip to next spring instead. If that split holds, Apple’s whole release rhythm shifts, with the Pro phones carrying the autumn launch on their own.
