Apple’s apparently splitting up its iPhone launch next year. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will still hit shelves in the fall as usual, but the standard iPhone 18? That’s looking like a spring 2027 release now.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the delay, but Nikkei Asia is now backing it up with their own sources. The reasoning comes down to money and logistics—memory chip prices are climbing, and Apple wants to squeeze maximum profit from the Pro models before the cheaper option shows up and cannibalises sales.
There’s also the foldable situation. Apple’s finally entering that market with the iPhone Fold launching alongside the Pro lineup this fall. First foldable for them, which means potential production headaches. Staggering the standard iPhone 18 release apparently frees up supply chain resources to keep that launch smooth.
The iPhone Air might tag along with the delayed iPhone 18 in early 2027, too, according to the same report.
Bit of a gamble for Apple. They’ve stuck to the “everything launches together in September” playbook for years. Spreading releases across fall and spring changes how people plan their upgrades. Whether that works out or frustrates customers waiting for the non-Pro option remains to be seen.
