Apple has now spoken about the cracked iPhone Duo screens. In a statement to 9to5Mac, the company confirmed it knows about a problem affecting the inner display on what it calls a small number of iPhone Duo units, and told owners who run into it to contact AppleCare for a replacement.

Apple Offered A Replacement But Gave No Cause
If your iPhone Duo’s inner screen cracks, Apple’s official answer is to call AppleCare and get the phone replaced. Before reaching the fault, the statement spent its first lines praising the reaction from early buyers and the developers updating their apps for the foldable design. What it left out was any explanation of why the screens are breaking, and Apple rarely gives one this early.
Getting in touch with AppleCare soon matters more than it sounds. Replacement units for a phone this new may be limited, so an early request puts you nearer the front of the queue.
Owners Felt The Hinge Resist Before The Screen Broke
The first reports surfaced on October 23, the day Apple’s first foldable iPhone went on sale. One of them came from Melbourne, where a buyer found a cracked inner screen just six hours after picking up the $1,999 phone.
The description repeated across posts on Reddit and the MacRumors forums follows a pattern:
- The Australian owner said the screen gave out after fewer than 20 openings, with something catching near the hinge on the way open and then a cracking sound
- In several cases a bright line of pixels showed up on one side of the display
- The owner said neither the screen surface nor the outside of the hinge showed damage beforehand, and Apple swapped the phone in store
More photos followed after that, including pictures of damaged demo units in China.
A Cracked Inner Screen Costs A Lot Without AppleCare+
A fault Apple accepts should be replaced free. Accidental damage is another matter, and the prices are steep:
- Inner display without AppleCare+: $999
- Inner display with AppleCare+: $99
- Cover layer: $49 without AppleCare+, $19 with it
- AppleCare+ itself: $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year
Recent buyers can still add AppleCare+, and looking at a $999 screen bill, a year of cover at $199.99 seems worth it for a phone with a brand new hinge design.
The Small Number Claim Is Believable For Now
Apple’s wording fits what has been seen so far. Sales of a $1,999 foldable in its first week are modest, and a handful of cases on forums doesn’t prove a design flaw across every unit. Still, Apple had leaned hard on durability when it launched the phone, describing a precision-engineered hinge and a multilayer inner display built for repeated folding. Whether those claims hold up should become clearer once more buyers have had their Duos for a few weeks.
