Huawei released the Mate 70 Air in early November 2025 as its first real try at the thin phone trend, and a year later the follow-up still hasn’t shown up. A tipster on Weibo now says the Mate 80 Air will launch in December, which would put it about a year after its predecessor.
The same tipster says the MatePad Mini 2 won’t arrive alongside the phone. The tablet could still come out in December, just not at the same event, even though earlier rumors had it down for November, and it’s expected to run HarmonyOS 7 out of the box.

The Mate 80 Air May Start With 12GB of RAM
Another tipster claimed a few days ago that a new Air model in the Mate series would launch within the next two months, starting with 12GB of RAM and keeping the round camera island from the Mate 70 Air. An earlier leak said 3D face recognition still won’t be included. The phone is expected to use Huawei’s Kirin 9030 chip and a curved screen, although Huawei hasn’t confirmed any of these details yet.
How Thin It Will Be Is Still Unknown
The Mate 70 Air is 6.6mm thin and weighs 208g, and Huawei still fitted it with a 7 inch screen and a 6,500mAh battery, which is a big part of why it got so much attention when it launched at 4,199 yuan. Some rumors have said the Mate 80 Air will be even thinner, but none of the leaks so far gives an actual figure, so we’ll have to wait for Huawei’s announcement to find out.
