The matte layer sitting on top of the iPhone Duo’s folding screen is not permanent, and Apple has put a price on replacing it. US customers with AppleCare+ pay $19 for a cover layer swap, which is listed on Apple’s own service and repair pages. Quinn Nelson of SnazzyLabs spotted it first.
Why That Layer Wears Out In The First Place
It’s the nano-texture surface that sits above the flexible display, and part of its job is hiding the crease down the middle of the phone. Since it bends every single time the phone opens and closes, it’s a wear item in the way a screen behind glass never is.

Kate Bergeron, Apple’s VP of hardware engineering, explained the thinking in an interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi, picked up by 9to5Mac. Apple engineered the layer to wear in rather than wear out, as she put it, so it should last a long while before anyone needs a new one. The point is that when it does go, you’re not replacing the whole display assembly.
What Else AppleCare Covers On This Phone
The rest of the Duo repair pricing with AppleCare+:
- Cover layer replacement: $19
- Full inner display repair: $99
- Front or back glass: $29
- Other accidental damage: $99
- Theft and loss: $149

Two things Apple hasn’t said. There’s no out-of-warranty price published for the cover layer, which matters because a $19 covered repair and an uncovered one are very different conversations. And whether you can actually do this yourself is unclear, since Apple’s service information points toward an authorised provider doing the work rather than treating it like a screen protector you peel on at home. The hinge was built around that exact layer thickness, so third party films are not something to expect soon either.
Samsung Still Has The Better Deal
Fold and Flip owners get their first protector replacement free inside the first 12 months, and every one after that is $19.99. So Samsung gives you one on the house, where Apple charges from the start and only at that price if you’re paying for AppleCare+. Close enough on the follow-up price, but the first swap goes to Samsung.
