Gemini 3 Flash is here, and it’s now Google’s default AI model

Google has just rolled out Gemini 3 Flash, and if you’re using the Gemini app, you’re probably already using it without realizing it.

This is the speedy version of Google’s AI model lineup. The company launched Gemini 3 Pro last month – that’s the heavy-duty option for complex stuff. Flash is designed to be quick. Google claims it responds about as fast as a regular Google search for most things you throw at it.

If you open the Gemini app and pick “Fast” or “Thinking,” you’re now getting Gemini 3 Flash by default. Want the Pro version instead? You’ll need to select “Pro” in the app manually. Google still reckons Pro is better for advanced math problems and complicated coding tasks, but Flash should handle pretty much everything else without breaking a sweat.

The benchmarks suggest Flash is genuinely decent. It outperforms its predecessor, Gemini 2.5 Flash, by quite a bit. In some tests, it matches OpenAI’s GPT-5.2. It even beats Gemini 2.5 Pro on certain tasks, while being considerably faster. Which makes sense – speed is literally the point here.

Flash has also become the go-to model for AI Mode in Google Search worldwide. Google says this means AI Modes now understands what you’re actually asking better, so you can ask more specific questions with multiple constraints and get properly formatted answers that aren’t complete rubbish.

Gemini 3 Pro shows up in Search, too, but only if you’re in the US. You’ll find it under “Thinking with 3 Pro” in the AI Mode dropdown menu. This version gives you more detailed help for complicated questions, complete with visual layouts, interactive tools, and simulations.

There’s also Nano Banana 3 Pro available in the search for US users. To use it, select “Thinking with 3 Pro” in the model picker, then choose “Create Images Pro.” Honestly, this all sounds needlessly complicated. Hopefully, Google figures out a simpler way to organize these options, because right now it’s a bit of a maze.
