“Huawei Unveils Mate 70 Series, with Mate 70 and Mate 70 Pro Taking Center Stage. Both devices offer notable upgrades and some unique features, but there are clear distinctions between them.

Mate 70: Slim and Flat

The Mate 70 is the smallest and slimmest phone in the lineup, just 7.8mm thick. It also stands out with its flat frame, a design choice that sets it apart from the rest of the series.

The phone features a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED display with FHD+ resolution and a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, making it a solid choice for smooth visuals. Like its sibling, it offers impressive 2,500 nits peak brightness and Huawei’s second-gen Kunlun Glass, which incorporates basalt fiber for better durability.

Mate 70 Pro: Bigger and Packed with Extras

The Pro model bumps up the display size to 6.9 inches, retaining the same resolution, brightness, and adaptive refresh rate. It also includes an additional 3D Depth Camera for more secure face unlocking, a feature missing on the standard Mate 70.

Both phones bring back side-mounted fingerprint sensors, now embedded in the power button. This button is smarter than ever, letting you toggle settings like the flashlight or AI assistant with specific presses.

Camera Innovations

Huawei keeps its camera game strong. Both models have:

  • A 50MP main camera with a variable aperture (f/1.4-f/4.0) and OIS for versatile shots.
  • A 40MP ultrawide lens for wider perspectives.

The Pro model upgrades its telephoto capabilities with a 48MP sensor and 4x optical zoom, while the Mate 70 opts for a 12MP periscope lens with 5.5x optical zoom.

The highlight here is Huawei’s new spectral imaging sensor, which sits in the middle of the camera island. It captures 1.5 million multi-spectral channels, promising better color accuracy, more natural skin tones, and improved detail in tricky lighting.

Chipset and Software

As usual, Huawei hasn’t disclosed specific chipset details, but rumors point to a Kirin 9100, likely built on a 6nm SMIC N+3 process. It’s said to feature a Cortex-X1 core clocked at 2.67GHz, but we’ll have to wait for teardowns to confirm.

Both phones run HarmonyOS 4.3 out of the box, with an update to HarmonyOS Next expected later.

Battery and Charging

The Mate 70 has a 5,300 mAh battery with support for 66W wired and 50W wireless charging, while the Mate 70 Pro steps it up with a 5,500 mAh battery, 100W wired, and 80W wireless charging.

Final Thoughts

Both the Mate 70 and Mate 70 Pro are available in Spruce Green, Hyacinth Purple, Snow White, and Obsidian Black. While the Mate 70 Pro clearly packs more advanced features, the Mate 70 holds its own with a sleek design and robust specs.

It’s exciting to see Huawei continuing to innovate, even under challenging circumstances. Whether you want the flagship Pro experience or the sleeker standard model, this series has something to offer.
