OnePlus is launching the 16 in China next week and has put the display sheet out ahead of time. The headline number is 185Hz, and the honest version of that number is 165Hz, because the extra 20Hz is locked to a gaming mode that only a handful of titles can switch on.

The 185Hz Mode Works In Four Games So Far

Day to day the phone runs at up to 165Hz, the same ceiling the OnePlus 15 had. The 185Hz setting only turns on inside supported games, and the launch list is Arena Breakout, Nizhan: Future, Naruto Mobile and Peace Elite, all of them Chinese titles, so anyone outside that ecosystem will likely never see the number on screen. More games may get added, though OnePlus has not said which or when.

The Panel Is BOE’s New X4 Material

  • A 1.5K LTPO OLED from BOE using the X4 luminescent material, which OnePlus and BOE developed together. Every OnePlus flagship since the 12 has run a BOE X-series panel, so this is the fourth generation of the same partnership.
  • Hardware brightness goes down to 1 nit for reading in the dark, where most panels bottom out somewhere higher and then fake it in software.
  • OnePlus claims power draw at 165Hz sits close to what a 120Hz screen pulls, which matters more than the refresh number when the phone has to feed that panel all day.
  • Bezels measure 1.15mm on all four sides, built with a LIPO process, which is the same manufacturing trick Apple uses to shave the border on the Pro iPhones.

There are three separate chips doing the work behind the glass: one for the display itself, one dedicated to touch response, and a third for connectivity. OnePlus also lists TÜV Rheinland Smart Eye Protection 6.0 on the eye-care side, though that certification has been on most Chinese flagships for a couple of years now and does not say much on its own.

What Sits Under The Screen

The OnePlus 16 ships in China with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, a 9,000mAh battery, a 200MP main camera and a 50MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. The 9,000mAh figure is up from 7,300mAh on the 15 and is the number most people will care about more than the refresh rate.

A global release has not been confirmed. Last year’s 15 did make it out of China, but OnePlus has been quiet about the 16’s travel plans so far, and the four-game 185Hz list reads like a phone built with the Chinese market in mind first.
