Honor put the Magic9 Pro Max on sale in China today, and the phone has been built around one idea, which is that people want to shoot video on it that looks like film. The partnership behind that is with ARRI, the German company whose cameras are used on actual film sets, and the design was shown off at the Venice Film Festival before launch.
Two 200MP Cameras, Both Stabilised
The main camera is a 200MP sensor at 1/1.28 inches with an f/1.57 aperture and a 23mm equivalent field of view. Sitting beside it is a 200MP periscope telephoto, 1/1.4-inch sensor, f/2.6, 85mm equivalent, giving 3.7x optical zoom. The ultrawide is 50MP at 12mm equivalent, and there’s a 55MP square-format sensor on the front.
Both the main and telephoto cameras carry mechanical gimbal stabilisation rated to CIPA 8.0, which is a higher rating than most phones bother claiming.
What The ARRI Partnership Gives You
This is the part that separates it from every other 200MP flagship. ARRI’s image science runs across all three rear sensors, so you get ARRI colour profiles and cinematic filters that change the grading with one tap.
More usefully for anyone editing afterwards, the phone records in the ARRI LogC3 curve at full 10-bit depth and in ARRI’s Wide Gamut 3 colour space, with 4K 120fps Log available at every focal length. Footage from it can go into a proper grading workflow rather than coming out already baked.
Honor sells accessories for this too. There’s an optional teleconverter that takes the reach out to 500mm, and a SmallRig cage with mounting points for grips, lights and microphones.
Display, Battery And The Rest Of The Sheet
The screen is a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED at 1320 x 2868, running 1Hz to 120Hz. Global peak brightness is 2,000 nits, with a 10,000-nit local peak that only appears on a small area during HDR playback, so treat that bigger number as a spec-sheet figure rather than something you’ll see.
Underneath is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 on 2nm, an 8,800mAh silicon-carbon battery with 100W wired and 80W wireless charging, MagicOS 11 on Android 17, and IP69K protection. The glass is Honor’s updated NanoCrystal Shield with extra silicon nitride layers and an anti-reflective coating.
What It Costs And Where You Can Get It
Four configurations in China, in Shadow Black, Glacier Silver and Moss Green:
- 12GB + 256GB: CNY 6,499, about $968
- 12GB + 512GB: CNY 6,999, about $1,043
- 16GB + 512GB: CNY 7,499, about $1,117
- 16GB + 1TB: CNY 8,499, about $1,266
There’s also a Master Photographer Package at CNY 10,999, roughly $1,639, which bundles the camera accessories.
Nothing has been said about international pricing or dates yet. Given how much of this phone is aimed at people who shoot video for a living, the ones waiting outside China will be watching for that announcement closely.
